The Region of Murcia has been declared the 2020/2021 Gastronomy Capital of Spain. The title was awarded by the Spanish Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers and the Spanish Federation of Hostelry in recognition of the richness, uniqueness and tradition behind the region’s products. The region offers a unique culinary voyage based on a wide selection of meat, treasures from the sea and the products of its exceptional farms. Indeed, the Spanish region’s care for its raw materials is what has put it on the culinary map, along with its efforts to foster creativity and innovation with a deep respect for tradition. Its farms, which export over two million tonnes of fruit and vegetables each year, are internationally renowned, working with the Murcian Institute of Agrarian and Food Research and Development to maintain and recover traditional varieties that have disappeared, as well as improving the existing crops and ensure that they can be harvested in the future.
